Long Island Village Named Best Place To Live In New York

The village's proximity to NYC and its diversity were cited among the reasons it was great. What do you think of the decision?

As part of its annual Best Places to Live issue, Money Magazine named Valley Stream as the best place to live in New York.

Though it didn't make the list of the top 100 places to live in the country, the magazine also broke out the top places in each state, because it said readers often ask for that.

The magazine said that the village's proximity to New York City (it sits right on the border with Queens) is one of the biggest draws. It's just a half-hour ride to Manhattan, and the village is by both the Southern State Parkway and the Belt Parkway, and Sunrise Highway runs right through the heart of town.

The magazine also liked the village's historic sites, its diverse population and the fact that it is a "close-knit suburban community."

"It’s wonderful to be recognized by a national magazine as living in the best place in the state," said Valley Stream Mayor Ed FAre. "For those of us who live here, we know how great Valley Stream is, due to its proximity to the LIRR and New York City, our great schools, low crime and a diversity of people who live and work together, and add a rich dimension to our community. There are 60 languages spoken here, but when it comes to our quality of life and what truly matters, we are one voice!"
