Lawrence Elementary Cooking Club Celebrates Hanukkah
The Cooking Club made Tasty Latkes in Celebration of Hanukkah

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (DECEMBER 2021)—Students in Lawrence Elementary School’s cooking club recently spent their afternoons cooking yummy potato pancake latkes for Hanukkah. Club advisors Cindy Hecht and Michele Adler helped students follow along with the recipe and explained the reason behind the tasty tradition.
“Teaching students about an important Jewish holiday through a fun and informative activity is a great way for students to learn and feel included,” said Dr. Ann Pedersen, superintendent of the Lawrence Union Free School District. “The students had a great time and really made such wonderful latkes!”
While cooking with students, Ms. Hecht and Ms. Adler taught them about why latkes are an important part of the Hanukkah tradition. Latkes, as the cooking club advisors pointed out, are used to remind those who celebrate the holiday of the miracle of oil and its association with Hanukkah. Additionally, students worked together to follow the recipe using the proper cooking utensils and cooked their latkes to perfection..
