Letter to the Editor: Hewlett-Woodmere's Troubling Program Cut

School district resident writes how she is troubled by decision to end adult education program.

The following letter was written and submitted to Patch by Woodmere resident Nancy Strong.

As a School District 14 resident and taxpayer for the past 46 years and a very satisfied participant in the adult education pilates class, I am disappointed and troubled by the Hewlett-Woodmere School District's decision to end the adult education program.

I'm not convinced that eliminating less than $400,000 (and I don't know how that figure was reached) from a budget in excess of $109 milllion is going to make an impact, but I am pretty sure that it will make quite a few residents very unhappy.

I, who moved here before I had children and have continued to live here long after my children graduated from the high school, have always seen the district as a community asset, not just an educational one. By ending the adult education program, you are terminating an important community function. I urge the district to put a greater effort into attracting participation in the program and to reconsider its decision.
