Man Set Fire To Chase Bank In Valley Stream: Police

The fire was set in the vestibule area of the bank, and the man added fuel to the fire, police say.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A Bronx man was arrested after Nassau police said he set fire to a Chase Bank in Valley Stream on Saturday.

Officers responded to the bank, at 930 Rosedale Avenue, around 5:15 a.m., police said. Officers saw a fire in the vestibule area of the bank, police said.

Garland Douglas, 32, who was standing outside the bank when police arrived, started the fire, police said. Douglas was inside the vestibule during the fire and was adding fuels to the fire, police said. He was placed into police custody without incident, police said. There were no injuries reported, the department said.

Douglas was in possession of a crack pipe that contained a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine and a syringe that had a brown substance on it believed to be heroin, police said.

Douglas was charged with third-degree arson and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

His arraignment had been scheduled for Feb. 18.
