Mangano: Evacuations for Atlantic Beach if Storm Track Doesn't Change

County advises residents to prepare to leave their homes.

After receiving news from the National Weather Service regarding the direct impact of Hurricane Irene, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has implemented a Coastal Storm Plan, effective immediately.

Residents of the Barrier Island, including Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, Long Beach, and Point Lookout should prepare for a possible evacuation, according to Mangano.

They "should begin contacting friends and family for alternative sheltering locations," Mangano said at a Thursday press conference. Residents are also advised to create a preparedness kit as well.

Public shelter locations, including Nassau Community College and Farmingdale State College, will be announced tomorrow. Evacuation routes can be found on the Office of Emergency Management website.

However, Mangano was stern with his warning.

"Let me be clear," he said. "If the storm track does not change, Nassau County will evacuate the Barrier Island."
