Nancy Lieberman Donates Basketball Courts To Nassau County

The basketball pro's charity is donating five courts to Nassau, which will be installed in county parks.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Thanks to a donation from Nancy LIeberman Charities and its Dream Court Program, Nassau County will be getting five new basketball courtes installed in county parks.

The five basketball courts are valued at $325,000, the county said. Three of the locations have already been chosen: Inwood Park, North Woodmere Park and Wantagh Park. The county is still deciding on locations for the other two courts.

“I am honored and humbled by this gracious donation from Nassau native, basketball icon and generous philanthropist, Nancy Lieberman, which will provide local youth with more safe places to build friendships, build confidence and compete throughout our cherished County parks,” said County Executive Laura Curran. “These new state-of-the-art basketball courts will be a gamechanger for our communities and I must thank Senator Todd Kaminsky for the introduction to Nancy and her incredible organization which led to this generous gift.”

Lieberman played for the U.S. national women's basketball team in the 1970s, and also went on to have a professional basketball career. She was one of the first players in the WNBA when it was formed in 1997, and was the oldest player in the league. A year later, she began a career in coaching that continues today.

The Dream Court Program will build and install the basketball courts. The first is expected to be completed this summer. The program builds basketball courts for children in underserved communities across the country, with the goal of keeping them off the streets and in a safe environment.

“I couldn’t be happier to be adding to all that Nassau County does for children," Lieberman said. "To have Dream Courts in areas that I grew up playing is one of the most wonderful things that I believe that we can give back to communities that enriched us as young people. I look forward to the partnership.”
