Nassau Man Drunkenly Crashed With Infant In Back Seat: Police

Police say the man crashed his car into a tree, then took his daughter's car seat out and fled on foot.

A Valley Stream man was arrested early Sunday morning after police say he crashed his car while driving drunk with his infant daughter in the back seat.

According to police, a 911 call came in at 2:20 a.m. for a 2001 Honda CRV striking a tree on Clearstream Avenue in Valley Stream. A witness said that the driver hit the tree, got out, took a car seat with a crying baby from the back seat and fled the scene on foot, heading east on Clearstream Avenue.

When they arrived, police say they found the driver near Clearstream Avenue and Cedar Street. Police say the man, Kevin Caceres, 25, of South Waldinger Street, had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol on his breath. Police placed him under arrest at 3:50 a.m.

The baby, Caceres's 9-month-old daughter, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but was uninjured. She was released to her mother.

Caceres is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated — Leandra's Law, driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.
