Passenger Charged; Loaded Gun Found At Traffic Stop: Police

The 24-year-old man faces arraignment on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm, police say.

INWOOD, NY — Police pulled over a man after committing several traffic infractions near the Nassau Expressway and Burnside Avenue on Sunday night.

During the investigation, officers determined a passenger had a loaded firearm and was placed in custody without incident, detectives said.

Dequan Smith, 24 of the Bronx, was due to be arraigned on Monday. He faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.

The driver of the 2010 Volkswagen was issued multiple traffic summons and released. A second passenger was able to leave to the scene without any consequences, police said.
