Residents Have Overwhelming Response to Sanitary District No. 1 'Shred-It' and E-Waste Event
Hundreds of residents attended the Sanitary District No. 1's 'Shred-It' and E-Waste event
Lawrence, N.Y. (November 18, 2015) – Hundreds of residents attended the Sanitary District No. 1’s ‘Shred-It’ and E-Waste event over the weekend despite the gloomy weather to securely destroy outdated personal documents and recycle unwanted electronics. The District’s Board of Commissioners James J. Vilardi, Irving J. Kaminetsky and Frank Argento, along with Superintendent George Pappas, greeted residents who came out and sorted waste to be properly disposed of.
“We are overwhelmed by the positive turnout of residents,” stated Sanitary District No. 1 Chairman James Villardi. “Cars lined up a mile long all morning and we filled multiple trucks with personal documents to be shredded. Residents have handed us shoeboxes with personal documents to be safely destroyed and have opened their trunks packed with electronics they want to recycle.”
The District utilized multiple shredding trucks onsite to destroy any private information, such as pre-approved credit offers, bank statements, pay stubs or tax returns. Also onsite were sorted boxes provided by GreenChip, a service which erases personal information on the recyclable electronic items. GreenChip partnered with the District to collect any unwanted electronics and erase data in strict compliance with the Department of Defense, NAID and R2 standards.

“This response verifies the community has a demand to safely destroy personal information, and as a District we are happy to host more shredding and e-waste events in the future,” added Superintendent George Pappas. “We will have more trucks on hand to accommodate the amount of waste even faster at the next event. Moreover, I would like to thank GreenChip for partnering with us and making it possible to collect so many broken, outdated or unwanted electronics. We look forward to working together again in the future.”
