Woodmere Republican Club Hosts first annual Nassau County Humane Rights For Animals Lobby Day.
The Woodmere Republican Club last Friday hosted its first annual Nassau County Humane Rights for Animals Lobby Day. The event offered a crash course on 2011 New York State Legislation for Humane Rights for Animals and lobbying techniques.
Patrick Kwan, New York State Director of The Humane Society of the United States, was among the attendees who educated the crowd on new pro-animal rights state legislation, including closing current animal fighting loopholes, protecting farm animals from cruel intensive confinement, banning tail docking and ending canned shooting of captive exotic wildlife.
Brian Cohen, an advocator for the group "Grateful Greyhounds," was also on hand to discuss how recent dog-racing track closings have led to a need of homes for thousands of Greyhounds.

While this was occuring, a group of concerned citizens representing "Hope For Hempstead Shelter" made it clear that they were unhappy with the current state of affairs at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. They hoped to discuss these concerns with NYS Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, who was scheduled to but did not attend the lobby session.
