Bites Nearby: Corfu Grill

Greek Cuisine with Extra-Special Specials

It’s a battle of the specials. On one side is brunch, while lunch is across way, and salad is a lurking around. And as long as this struggle goes on, the winner will always be the customer.

Like most Greek restaurants, Corfu Grill serves delicious gyros, souvlaki, moussaka, pasticcio, kebabs and a wide variety of seafood. But these entrees – and many others – become super-sized and super bargains from Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Pay $6.99 and choose Greek or Caesar salad, chicken or lentil soup and the above-mentioned items of any of the following with rice, hand-cut fries or lemon potatoes: falafel, spinach pie, sausage, dolmades, fried fish, befteki, cheese burger, turkey burger, veggie burger, chicken fingers, Buffalo wings, chicken oreganata, zucchini balls, meat sauce penne or vegetarian penne.

Or pay $10.45 for a lunch special with fillet of sole, fried calamari, grilled calamari, grilled salmon, seafood penne or other dishes.

Then there are the salad specials, which include a bowl of chicken or lentil soup and pita bread. Greek, Caesar, marouli, salmon and tuna versions cost $6.99, while green and vegetarian Greek or Caesar versions go for $5.50.

Weekends bring brunch specials from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with omelets and unlimited supplies of coffee, juice and soda ($10) or bellini, mimosa and sangria ($15). Of course, there is the spinach-and-feta omelet, but there are also cheddar-and-bacon, sausage pepper-and-onion and tomato-and-feta options. For the same price, patrons can order steak and eggs, lox and cream cheese, apple cinnamon French toast or pancakes.

All sandwich specials are $10 each, except for the combo, which includes the choice of two kinds of meat.

At other times, the Bites Nearby column suggests the “plates,” which include Greek salad, lemon potatoes, rice, vegetables, tzatziki sauce, and pita. A few examples are the beef kebab ($15), cubes of tender, prime beef; loukaniko ($12.50), homemade sausage; and stuffed vegetarian eggplant ($11.95). The seafood plates come from every area of the ocean. A few examples: broiled shrimp with garlic wine sauce for $17; fried or grilled calamari with red onions and parsley for $14; shrimp kebob with peppers and onions for $18.50; and grilled octopus drizzled with olive oil vinaigrette for $16.95.

Pasta plates generally run $12.95.

Corsu serves a “dessert of the day” for $4.05. Bites Nearby also suggests galaktobouriko, which is custard pastry with honey, and baklava with vanilla ice cream, both of which cost $5.
