Honoring Tradition, and Moving Forward Pt. 1

In this day and age when people struggle with finding a place for spirituality in a modern world, how do we preserve the traditions of the past, while meeting the needs of today?

In these upcoming posts I am going to give a few examples of ways the Episcopal Church in our community is approaching the issue of trying to honor the past, while adapting to the needs of the future.

In any kind of religious community, there are traditions that come from long, long, ago.  In another time and place, these things were crucial to living in the world at that time.  How do we translate these things into our modern lives?

One tradition that is honored in the Episcopal Church is Michaelmas, or the Feast of St. Michael and All the Angels.  Traditionally, it honored not only St. Michael and All the Saints, but also the coming of Autumn and the Harvest Season.

Marking the Harvest is hardly a regular occurance for most folks from Queens, but today St. Luke's Church, which has a service for Michaelmas, encourages people to bring fresh flowers to the service honor this past harvest tradition.

The Michaelmas Mass still honors St. Michael and all the Saints, who have brought faith and blessings to peoples lives, but adds a focus on modern day saints, who are people we may meet and interact with in our everyday lives.

These everyday saints may be people you see on the subway, at work, or at home, and while Michaelmas takes St. Michael's name, in today's modern tradition, we share this day with those saints whose names you may not even know.

If you're interested in learning more about Michaelmas, you can visit the St. Luke's website below, or join us for Michaelmas itself on Thursday, Sept 29th at 7:30 pm.
