TABLAO FLAMENCO - 2015 Summer Finale

Cabaret-style show featuring Flamenco and other kinds of Spanish dance and music presented by American Bolero Dance Company in Queens, NYC

LIC-based American Bolero Dance Company will present the second and last installment of its Summer 2015 performance series, Tablao Flamenco, again at The Chian Federation in Astoria, NY on Friday, August 14 at 8:30 PM.

Tablao Flamenco is an ongoing series of monthly showcases featuring live Flamenco and other kinds of Spanish dance and music performed by some of the finest talent from New York City and abroad. Presented like a cabaret, where guests can order and enjoy food and drinks during the show, Tablao Flamenco re-creates the experience of being in one of Spain’s flamenco clubs (or ‘tablaos’) for the NYC audience.

Gabriela Granados, American Bolero Dance Company’s Artistic Director and Founder, created the series after realizing that very few opportunities to regularly see Flamenco and other related dance styles presented in this format had existed right in Queens. To do so often required travelling into Manhattan. In 2008, she established the borough’s own tablao, drawing from her own professional experiences performing in three of Madrid’s most legendary tablaos flamencos (Los Canasteros, Zambra and Las Brujas).

Several features set Ms. Granados’ production apart from others in New York City. Many of the tablao-type shows, particularly in Manhattan, take place in restaurants where a very limited number of artists perform only Flamenco on a small platform space. American Bolero Dance Company’s Tablao Flamenco series presents not only popular Andalusian Flamenco as expected, but also rarely performed Spanish classical and regional dances, many of which feature castanets, along with other international dance and musical styles from Latin America and elsewhere that have influenced or been influenced by those of Spain. Over the course of the series, some of the shows have included performances of Salsa, Argentinean Tango and Chacarera, and Middle Eastern Bellydance; it has even featured a comedic skit by a “flamenco clown”. Furthermore, The Chian Federation’s stage has enabled the Company to showcase the theatrical group choreographies in its repertory, in addition to presenting an authentic “cuadro flamenco”, where all musicians and dancers are seated in a semi-circle onstage in full view of the audience, as is done in the tablaos of Madrid and Seville.

Since its premiere, Tablao Flamenco has established itself as one of City’s celebrated cultural fixtures, and garnered recognition and praise from both audience members and the media. The series has been hailed as a “dazzling spectacle”, “incredibly intense”, and “artfully performed”, and its world-class dancers, singers and musicians described as “impressive”, with “outstanding skill”.

The August 14th show and its stellar cast certainly live up to such accolades. It features dancers Gabriela Granados, Paloma Ríos, Alicia Blumenfeld and Isabel Del Día; singers Barbara Martínez and Aurora Reyes; flamenco guitarists Basilio Georges and Cristian Puig; Spanish classical guitarist Paul Jared Newman; and the Ballet Español de Gabriela Granados.
