New York Transit Museum To Mark 50 Years With Disco Dance Party

BROOKLYN, NY — The New York Transit Museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a one-night-only disco, funk and hip-hop fundraiser, transforming its historic decommissioned subway station into a 1970s-inspired dance party.

Vinyl Nights Presents Return to '76 will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, with DJs spinning exclusively on vinyl across two levels of the museum. Disco will take over the mezzanine, while funk and hip-hop will fill the subway platform below.

The evening will begin with New Style Hustle lessons led by Jeff Selby and a DJ set from Miss Gypsy. Later, DJ Misbehaviour will bring a feel-good disco set to the mezzanine and the museum's On the Streets exhibition.

Downstairs, Operator Emz will provide the soundtrack as guests dance among more than 20 historic subway cars, ranging from early wooden elevated cars to the retro-futuristic "Million-Dollar Car" and colorful Bluebirds and Redbirds associated with New York's transit system in the 1970s and '80s.

Guests will also be able to explore the museum's exhibits throughout the night, including The New York Transit Museum: 50 Years of Stories, which revisits the institution's 1976 opening, and Ode to the Orange Seats, an exhibition celebrating the iconic subway seats introduced in the 1970s.

Food and beverage offerings will include a specialty "MetroGold" cocktail from Fort Hamilton Distillery, Rockaway Brewing Co. beers, and still and sparkling water from Open Water.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1976-inspired fashions, with bell-bottoms, platform shoes, jumpsuits, sequins, satin and bold prints welcome.

A costume contest will take place at 8:30 p.m. during a Soul Train line on the mezzanine.

Judges will include Vinyl Nights founder Rebecca Lynn, Miss Subways 2026 Abby Fantastic and NYC Subway voice Bernie Wagenblast.

Prizes will include New York Transit Museum memberships and Vinyl Nights merchandise.
