Blackbirds sweep local rival St. Francis Brooklyn; on target to host a third straight Northeast Conference volleyball tournament

The remarkable run of success enjoyed by the LIU Brooklyn women’s volleyball team in Northeast Conference (NEC) play continued Saturday afternoon as the Blackbirds beat local rival St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-10) to improve to 17-5 overall, including a perfect 8-0 in the NEC.

As reported by LIU Brooklyn Athletics, Annika Foit, the NEC two-time player of the year, led LIU with 10 kills and two service aces, while Vera Djuric had 27 assists. Adriana Viñas Joy led the defense with 14 digs, and registered three service aces in the win.

But the Blackbirds’ dominance in their conference has been anything but recent. LIU Brooklyn has been in the NEC championship match ten of the past eleven years, capturing an unprecedented eight titles.

Sporting the longest current conference winning streak in NCAA D1 women’s volleyball, the Blackbirds—with eight remaining NEC regular season contests—have a ways to go to challenge the 114-conference win streak by the University of Hawaii at Manoa that spanned from 1998 to 2006.

Having swept through the first half of their conference schedule unscathed—and currently the only undefeated squad in the NEC—LIU Brooklyn is on track to again host the 2014 NEC Women’s Volleyball Championship, November 22-23, at the Steinberg Wellness Center.

Tuesday LIU Brooklyn will travel to New Jersey for its final non-conference match-up against Seton Hall at 7pm. The Blackbirds will return home to host NEC foe Farleigh Dickinson on Saturday, November 1 at 1pm.
