Brooklyn Born 'Galapagos Art Space' Set to Move Westward

The long established Williamsburg and DUMBO art space is moving to Detroit at the end of this month.

Approaching its 20th year of operation, the notable Galapagos Art Space is set to close later this month for a massive relocation to Detroit due to rising rent prices, according to the NY Times.

The Galapagos instillation space is no stranger to moving, as it previously relocated its longtime Williamsburg space to the current DUMBO location in 2008.

Their current venue is dwarfed by the new expansive space in Detroit. Director Robert Elmes and wife Philippa Kaye have purchased nine other buildings in the Detroit area, totaling over 600,000 square feet, according to the NY Times.

The centerpiece of the new space will be a 10,000 square-foot lake, which will be a 16 month renovation project before its opening.

Michigan was an affordable solution to what Elmes said to the NY Times as , “a white-hot real estate market burning trough the affordable cultural habitat,” in New York City.

Galapagos hopes to “go back to the early years of our venue and recreate the success that we had and the impact that we had on a growing community” according to the NY Times.
