Man Convicted For Fatal Dating App Meet-up In Fort Greene

The Pennsylvania man was found guilty for manslaughter after fatally stabbing a man he met on a dating app last year.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — A Pennsylvania man who stabbed and killed a man he just met on a dating app could face up to 25 years in prison, a jury decided this week.

David Haigh, 43, was acquitted Wednesday of second-degree murder charges for the fatal encounter, but convicted of first-degree manslaughter, city records show. Haigh had been remanded to Rykers Island since police found that he had repeatedly stabbed James Johnson in a Fort Greene apartment last April.

The two men had spent a drug-and-alcohol fueled 48 hours in Johnson's apartment after meeting on Jack'd, a dating app for men, the Brooklyn Eagle reported.

During the two-week long trial, the Eagle reported, Haigh and his defense attorney claimed that he was acting in self defense and scared Johnson was going to hurt him. Haigh had called 911 and texted friends "9-1-1" multiple times before the brawl between him and Johnson broke out.

Johnson was found with 18 stab wounds and 21 lacerations from the attack, according to the Eagle.

The medical examiner confirmed that "multiple stab wounds to the chest and body" had been his cause of death, city records show.

Haigh is due back in court on Jan. 10 for a sentencing.

He could face a minimum of five years up to a maximum of 25 years on the conviction.
