'Pizza Loves Emily' Owners Accused Of Cheating Investors: Suit

Emily and Matthew Hyland are being sued by Garlic Knots 364 Inc. for excluding them on the Emily West Village deal.

CLINTON HILL, BROOKLYN — Investors are demanding the owners of Clinton Hill’s hottest pizzeria hand over their fair share of the pie, court records show.

Emily and Matthew Hyland — the married couple behind Emily in Clinton Hill, Emmy Squared in Williamsburg and the recently opened Emily West Village — are being sued by investors who claim the pizza makers expanded in Manhattan without them.

Garlic Knots 364 Inc. — the group of five investors that helped fund Emmy Squared — allege the Hylands excluded investors from the lucrative West Village deal by creating a new holding company without telling them, according to the complaint filed in New York Supreme Court in April.

"The Hylands simply changed the name of the soon-to-open restaurant with the sole goal of diverting and exploiting for their own benefit the opportunity that rightfully belonged to the Plaintiffs,” the complaint alleges.

Investors also claim the Hylands used corporate money to fund their vacations, pay themselves unauthorized management fees and to cover the costs of other Hyland-owned companies.

A representative for the Hylands told the New York Post, who originally reported the suit, that the couple had presented the Emily West Village deal to investors and that no funds had been mismanaged.

“The Hylands deny the allegations that have been made against them,” the rep told the Post. “Not only are the management fees and related expenses permitted by the shareholders agreement, but instead money is actually owed to them.”

“The Hylands will absolutely and vigorously defend themselves.”
