Uniondale Union Free School District’s elementary schools recently participated in Smile Day, a worldwide celebration to spread joy where people commit to performing random acts of kindness. As part of the event, scholars and staff came to school wearing clothing with smiley faces or their favorite outfits.
Scholars started the day by spreading positivity through art and creative writing. They crafted bookmarks and posters and were encouraged to gift their artwork to a peer. Scholars were then tasked with designing an emoticon representing their personality and then writing about what makes them smile and how they can make others smile. Other activities included making cards for friends and writing jokes for scholars and staff.
“Through World Kindness Day, we’ve shown our scholars across the District that a small act of kindness can go a long way,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “Celebrating acts of kindness uplifts the school community and helps create a positive atmosphere. It’s important to teach our scholars that they never know what someone is going through and to take the time to listen, learn and most importantly, be kind to one another.”

Throughout the day, positive vibes filled the elementary schools. Big smiles and contagious laughter were heard in every classroom. Through various exercises, scholars helped each other overcome obstacles and learned how to be there for one another.
Although Uniondale’s elementary schools spent October 7th focusing on smiles, staff will continue to promote random acts of kindness throughout the school year. The scholars and staff will keep on smiling across Uniondale!
