Roosevelt Welcomes Students Back for 2026-2027 School Year with Celebration, Community and School Spirit

The Roosevelt School District welcomed students back for the 2026-2027 school year with excitement, unity and celebration as staff, administrators and community partners helped create a warm and inspiring start to the new school year.

At Roosevelt Middle School, the district welcomed its first-ever sixth-grade class. Teachers greeted the newest members of the RMS community as students reviewed their schedules and received Yondr pouches designed to securely store cell phones during the school day, helping reduce distractions and support focus in the classroom.

"The first day of school is always a special moment, but this year brought even more reasons to celebrate," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. "From welcoming our first sixth-grade class at Roosevelt Middle School to the tremendous support of our community partners at Washington Rose, our schools demonstrated what it means to come together for our students. We are excited about the year ahead and remain committed to creating learning environments where every student feels welcomed, supported and ready to succeed."

At Washington Rose Elementary School, students received a red-carpet welcome as district administrators joined members of local Divine Nine fraternities and Doric Lodge #53 to cheer students on as they arrived for the first day of school. With upbeat music filling the air, students entered the building smiling, high-fiving community members and receiving an enthusiastic welcome.

Across the district, staff warmly greeted students and families at Centennial Avenue Elementary School, Ulysses Byas Elementary School, and Roosevelt Middle School. At Roosevelt High School, students reunited with friends, and seniors marked the beginning of their final year by gathering on the football field to watch the sunrise.
