Freeport Man Arrested In Connection With $70K Check Fraud Scheme: PD

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A Freeport man was arrested this week in connection with a 2025 incident in which a Queens man passed a fraudulent check for $74,000, police said.

According to police 40-year-old Dwayne Campbell was arrested Jan. 6, 2025 after depositing a fraudulent check at a Capital One Bank branch on Sunrise Highway in Valley Stream. That check, police said, caused a loss of over $74,000 and left Campbell facing a charge of second-degree grand larceny and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

This week, after an investigation, police said 40-year-old Freeport resident Laron McCravey was arrested and charged with the same pair of charges as Campbell — one count of second-degree grand larceny and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

According to police, McCravey acted in concert with Campbell in the efforts to forge and deposit the check, and will be arraigned Thursday in Hempstead.
