LI Woman Tried To Scam Elderly Woman Out Of Thousands: Police
Police say she tried to scam an 85-year-old woman from Indiana out of thousands of dollars.
A Freeport woman was arrested yesterday and charged with trying to scam an elderly woman in Indiana out of thousands of dollars.
According to police, an 85-year-old woman in Noblesville, Indiana received a call from someone claiming to be her grandson. The man told her that he was under arrest for DWI and gave her a number for an attorney she should call. The woman called the number, and was told she would need $8,800 to bail out her grandson.
The woman said she could only send $2,800, which was agreed upon, and the money was sent to an address in Freeport.

The woman was then called again and asked to send more money, which is when she realized she was the victim of a scam. She contacted the Noblesville Police Department, which in turn contacted the Freeport Police Department.
Detectives coordinated the delivery of the money to a home on Westend Avenue, police said. An investigation led to the arrest of Liany Torres, 21.

Torres is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree attempted grand larceny. She is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead today.
