Man Dives Into Water Trying To Avoid Officers: Police

FREEPORT, NY — A man, who drove into a fence in Freeport, refused police commands on Monday night, detectives said.

The man, Lloyd Berger, 60, from Copiague, attempted to avoid officers by driving his vehicle in reverse onto Bedell Street, police said.

He exited the vehicle and dove into the water. Freeport Police with the assistance of Nassau County police on marine officers were able to take Berger into custody, detectives said.

He was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

An investigation revealed that Berger was previously arrested on July 11 in Freeport on several charges including five counts of criminal possession of stolen property. He was issued an appearance ticket.
