Police say he tried to rob the store, but instead shot the clerk twice and fled.

Nassau police released pictures of the man they say shot a deli clerk twice during a robbery early Wednesday morning in Freeport.

According to police, the man pictured above entered Family Gourmet Deli, located at 292 North Main Street, at 2:30 a.m. He pulled out a gun and demanded money from the 43-year-old man working behind the counter. However, before the man could give him money, and without provocation, he fired his gun, striking the man once in the upper chest and once in the leg. Police say the man then fled without taking anything.

The clerk was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
