Roosevelt Students Master Computer Science This Summer
Centennial Avenue summer program teaches students about coding, game design and robotics
ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (AUGUST 2023) — Students in the Roosevelt School District spent this summer unlocking their imaginations by discovering the limitless possibilities of computer science. The District’s Computer Science Academy offered a different kind of summer camp at which students learned to code, design video games and create their own robots. The three-week program was held at Centennial Avenue Elementary School for students in second through sixth grade. Hosted by Hempstead-based extracurricular program Culture Play, the Computer Science Academy is part of the District’s commitment to providing students with numerous opportunities to pursue their interests in STEAM.
“Here at Roosevelt, we believe in cultivating the passions and talents of all of our students. The possibilities are endless when it comes to what our students can achieve, which is why we provide them with multiple avenues to learn, explore and excel,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deborah Wortham. “Students enrolled in the Computer Science Academy could leave the program inspired to take more classes in the subject and even pursue a college education or career in computer science.”
The program ran from July 17 through August 3 and culminated with an Invention Convention on August 10, where students demonstrated everything they learned and showcased their creations. Each week was dedicated to different topic starting with “Computer Science Unplugged,” which taught students the ins and outs of computer science and coding. The following week offered a course on game design and the last week was devoted to robotics.
