Roosevelt Track and Field Teams Have a Booming Winter Season

Boys Girls Track Teams Finish the Season with Several New Records

Roosevelt High School proudly celebrated the exceptional achievements of its Varsity Boys and Girls Track and Field athletes who competed in the prestigious Nassau County Class AA Winter Track and Field Championships, held at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington on Wednesday, February 4.

Representing Roosevelt with dedication, strength, and exemplary sportsmanship, student-athletes showcased their talents against top competitors from across Nassau County. The Roosevelt Boys and Girls Track Teams delivered an outstanding championship performance, walking away with seven All-County championships, eleven All-County athlete honors, seven new personal records, one new school record, and one New York State number one ranking.

Leading the way was Esmia Thomas, who captured the county title in the girls 55-meter dash with a blazing time of 7.10 seconds. Her performance not only set a new school record but also earned her the top ranking in New York State. On the boys’ side, Leroy Barrett claimed the championship in the 55-meter dash with a personal record of 6.44 seconds. Tajha Coggins also delivered a strong performance, earning seventh place overall in the girls 55-meter dash.

In the field events, Nefertari Cameron captured first place in the shot put, while sophomore Mariam Lawal followed closely with an impressive third-place finish. The girls 4x200-meter relay team, comprised of Joy Frank, Esmia Thomas, Tajha Coggins, and Sophia Lobban, continued their dominance by earning the title of back-to-back county champions. The boys 4x200-meter relay team, featuring Kyree Robinson, Leroy Barrett, Raniel Barrett, and Akenio Wallace, secured a strong third-place finish.

Overall, the girls team finished fourth in the county standings, while the boys 4x400-meter relay team earned a fifth-place finish. Individually, Joy Frank also placed sixth in the triple jump, adding to the team’s impressive list of accomplishments.

Several freshmen made a significant impact at the championship. Tyler Lindo jumped a personal-best distance of 19 feet, 2 inches to earn fifth place overall and was the only freshman to qualify for the finals. Raniel Barrett also stood out, running a personal record of 6.87 seconds in the 55-meter dash and finishing as the highest-placing freshman in the event.

The Roosevelt School District extends a heartfelt congratulations to Coach Robert Sweeney, Coach Tywaun Sanford, and Coach Rhoderick McGhee for their continued leadership and success. Congratulations to all the student-athletes whose hard work, determination and dedication made this championship performance possible. The entire Roosevelt community is incredibly proud and wishes the team the best of luck at the upcoming State Qualifiers.
