Roosevelt's Ulysses Byas Celebrates Black History Month

Students Host Showcase of Art, Storytelling and Dance

Ulysses Byas Elementary School in the Roosevelt School District recently celebrated Black History Month with a day of education, dance, storytelling and creative expression as students honored the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

“The Ulysses Byas community came together for an engaging showcase that highlighted the impacts, contributions and legacies of Black Americans,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “We are so proud of our students for their dedication to and commitment in putting together such an important assembly. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and creativity that continues to shape our world.”

Ulysses Byas kicked off their assembly by hosting their schoolwide talk show UB’s Point of View: Black History. Student hosts led discussions about the lessons and importance of Black History before introducing performances from their peers. The event featured cultural dances, rituals, poems, stories and artwork highlighting Black history.
