Dr. Akil Recognized for her Achievements as Uniondale's Superintendent of Schools

Black History Month is a time when extraordinary individuals within the black community are honored for their achievements throughout the years. At Legislator Kevan M. Abrahams & Fidelis Care’s Black History Month celebration, Uniondale Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil was honored for her many contributions to the District and Uniondale community.

“I was greatly honored to be recognized by Legislator Kevan Abrahams and Fidelis Care at this year’s Black History Month Celebration,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “I am incredibly proud to be the Superintendent of Uniondale Schools, helping to provide our scholars with the technological, social, economic and academic skills needed to face a complex and multi-faceted global society. Our scholars are the future, and I am so thankful to be given the opportunity to help them reach their full potential.”

As Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Akil oversees the education and well-being of over 6,400 scholars with an annual budget of over $230 million. She has played an instrumental role in the development and rollout of the District’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on strengthening scholars’ skills from a young age by creating a learning environment that promotes every scholar to be empowered, responsible, resilient and prepared for leadership, college and careers. Dr. Akil has made it her mission to foster a commitment to educational equity, create a desire for scholars to make an impact and ensure they feel prepared to take whatever path they choose beyond graduation.
