Uniondale Goes Orange for Unity

Uniondale High School recently participated in Unity Day, a nationwide initiative by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center to promote solidarity among scholars while raising awareness about bullying. Scholars and staff sported orange attire and participated in various activities where they were instructed on how to address bullying situations.

“About 20 percent of students ages 12-18 experience bullying nationwide,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “Unity Day is a meaningful step in changing that culture. By coming together in this display of solidarity and teaching our scholars how to be an upstander, we are taking the necessary steps to stop bullying in its tracks.”

Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center encourages school districts to partake in Unity Day annually to build an understanding of how to stop bullying from occurring. Pacer provides schools with hands-on resources to keep the anti-bullying conversation in the classroom respectful and insightful. Through workshops, scholars participate in hypothetical bullying scenarios based on real events, where they work together to brainstorm responses and solutions to the problem. Scholars are also asked to sign an anti-bullying pledge to unite against bullying and be kind, accepting and inclusive.
