Uniondale Not Burning the Flame When it Comes to Fire Safety

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, Uniondale Union Free School District conducted various training exercises to ensure scholars have the knowledge they need to make appropriate decisions in a fire emergency. The Uniondale Fire Department partnered with the District's elementary schools to conduct numerous training programs throughout the week.

Fire drills were held at each elementary school, with scholars instructed on how to exit the school building safely. Dressed in full gear, Firefighters from Uniondale Fire Department held assemblies at each school to discuss fire safety. The firefighters shared safety tips and informed scholars on what causes fires and how to prevent one from accidentally starting. In the event of a fire emergency in the home, scholars were instructed to remain calm and quickly exit their houses.

The firefighters also discussed various aspects of their job to the delight of the young scholars interested in one day joining the force. The firefighters showed the scholars the different components of their uniforms and allowed them to handle various tools. They also explained how they rescue fire victims and control fires.

"The Uniondale School District takes fire safety training very seriously," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. "We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Uniondale Fire Department firefighters, who are dedicated to keeping our scholars safe. While we know our scholars have been taught to stop, drop and roll, it's still important to conduct annual training to reinforce fire safety tips, ensuring everyone is prepared in the event of an emergency."

Despite Fire Prevention week concluding, the Uniondale School District plans to continue with education on this topic. Through its partnership with the fire department, the District will continue to hold drills throughout the year.
