Uniondale’s Grand Avenue Holds Read and Eat Dessert with Dad Event

Uniondale Union Free School District’s Grand Avenue Elementary School recently held a Read and Eat Dessert with Dad event after school. Scholars in Pre-K-5 and their father figures, including but not limited to dads, uncles, older brothers, cousins and other male role models, were invited to the Grand Avenue School to read together and play games.

“The Read and Eat Dessert with Dad event was a fantastic opportunity for our scholars to bond with their father figures,” said Uniondale Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “It’s incredibly important for parents to encourage young scholars to develop a love of reading, and by having parental support through quality time spent reading together, it helps to make it a more enjoyable experience for all.”

Scholars and their father figures sat on blankets in the gym for a picnic-like atmosphere. Scholars presented their father figures with essays written throughout the week about why their father figure is their superhero. They then snacked, read, played games and socialized with their friends.

Uniondale Union Free School District continues to teach scholars about the importance of reading and building academic skills. According to a study from the Children’s Bureau of Southern California, young scholars can develop better communication, social, and literacy skills if they read daily. The success of Grand Avenue’s event further illustrates these points, as many parents helped their children improve their reading comprehension and communication skills.
