Uniondale’s My Brother’s Keeper Holds Back-to-School Barbeque

Returning and New Members Invited to Learn about the Organization

Uniondale Union Free School District’s My Brother’s Keeper organization recently held a back-to-school barbeque celebration attended by returning and prospective new members.

In commenting on the event, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil noted, “Last April, we held our first My Brother’s Keeper Symposium here at the high school. It was an incredibly successful event, with workshops, guest speakers and a panel discussion. Additionally, with college recruiters invited to the event, MBK members had the opportunity to network. This year, our back-to-school barbeque was the perfect opportunity for high school scholars to turn out and learn about the great opportunities MBK has to offer. We look forward to continuing to prepare our young men for life post-graduation.”

On October 1, 2021, the Uniondale School District was recognized as a My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) community by the New York State Education Department. MBK was created by President Barack Obama as an initiative to help young men of color reach their full potential by focusing on six core milestones: getting a healthy start and entering school ready to learn; reading at grade level by third grade; graduating from high school prepared for college and careers; completing postsecondary education or training; successfully entering the workforce; and finally, keeping kids on track and giving them second chances. Uniondale works closely with scholars, alumni, families and community-based organizations to implement goals and objectives for MBK.
