2 Hospitalized After West Hempstead Fire

The blaze broke out in the basement of a furniture store Friday morning, police say.

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY- Two people were taken the hospital and others were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after a fire that broke out at a store in West Hempstead trapped people in an apartment above.

According to police, the fire started around 10:43 a.m. in the basement of Majestic Decorators located at 104 Hempstead Turnpike. Upon arrival, officers observed people trapped in a second floor apartment, police said.

Officers were able to gain access to the second floor with the use of a ladder and get the victims to safety, police said.

A 40-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were transported by county ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. Police did not say how serious their injuries are.

The West Hempstead Fire Department, along with three other departments assisting at scene, extinguished the fire, using 12 pieces of apparatus and approximately 100 firefighters.

Civilians and officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, police said. The fire appears non-suspicious at this time and it has not been determined how it started.
