2 Trucks Strike Overpass Minutes Apart: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending July 8.
- Officers assisted the Fire Department for a report of a fire alarm activation at a Franklin Avenue commercial building on July 1. Upon investigation, it was determined the alarm was activated due to burnt food.
- Officers responded to Cherry Valley Avenue where a truck struck the overpass on July 1. The driver, a 55-year-old man from Commack, was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. While investigating this accident, a second truck struck the overpass. The driver, a 29-year-old man from New Jersey, was also charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. Both vehicles suffered damage. There were no reported injuries at either incident.
- Officers responded to Nassau Boulevard on July 1 after a car lost control and crashed into the train bridge structure. The fire department responded and assisted in the extraction of the driver, a 43-year-old man from Westbury, who was then transported to a hospital for multiple injuries. Upon investigation, he was arrested and charged with DWI.
- Three bicycles were reported stolen from a Locust Street driveway on July 1.
- As a result of a power outage on July 1, officers responded to Washington and Stewart Avenues for a traffic light malfunction.
- A pick-up truck was reported stolen from a work site on Stewart Avenue on July 1. The vehicle was located a few blocks away in East Garden City.
- An officer responded to Adams Street on July 1 where a rabbit was entangled in a soccer net. The officer was able to free the rabbit, which then ran away from the area.
- License plates were reported stolen from two vehicles parked at a Commercial Avenue business on July 2.
- On July 2, a resident reported two attempts by an unknown person to cash forged checks against her bank account.
- A 56-year-old male was driving north on Tanners Pond Road on July 3 when he suffered a medical condition causing the vehicle to strike and damage a stop sign and light pole.
- As a result of a power outage on July 3, officers responded to multiple traffic light outages in the center of the village.
- Officers assisted the fire department, which responded to a working house fire on Nassau Boulevard on July 4. A passerby observed flames on the side of the house and used a garden hose to control the spread of the fire until the arrival of firefighters. The Fire Marshal's Office, NCPD Arson Squad and GCPD Detectives are investigating the incident.
- Officers were assigned to traffic details for a rally/protest that took place on Franklin Avenue and 14th Street on July 4.
- The Police and Water Departments responded to a water line break on Rockaway Avenue on July 5.
- The bumper to a vehicle parked on Cherry Valley Avenue was found damaged on July 6.
- Firefighters responded to a residence for a barbecue fire on July 6. The fire was extinguished without further incident.
- A license plate was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Commercial Avenue on July 7.
- A rear window to a vehicle parked on Harrison Street was found damaged on July 7.
