2018 Election Preview: 4th Congressional District

Incumbent Democrat Kathleen Rice is being challenged by Republican newcomer Ameer Benno.

In the race for New York's 4th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Kathleen Rice is being challenged by Republican newcomer Ameer Benno.

Rice has served in Congress since 2015, and is running for her third term. The former Nassau County district attorney, Rice sits on the Homeland Security Committee, is the ranking member on the Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee, and also sits on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. As a freshman Congresswoman, Rice managed to get two laws passed: one to help veterans get employment and one to improve airport security.

Benno is a first-generation American, the son of an Israeli father and Ukrainian mother. He grew up in Albany and moved to Long Island with his wife after college. He is a lawyer, and spent years working as a prosecutor for the Manhattan district attorney. After that, he went into private practice, first with a law firm, and then starting his own firm in 2009. Benno also founded the Solis Justitia Project, a non-profit that brings civil litigation against governments that sponsor terrorism and the banks that transfer money to terrorist groups.
