#56: Things and Stuff

How did Things and Stuff acquire new owners two years ago? It all started with a wrong turn, according to Teresa, the current owner of the Seventh Street gift shop.

“While going to a doctor appointment, realized I was going the wrong way and turned down Seventh Street only to notice a going-out-of-business sign.” They had become good friends with the original owners while planning their wedding.

“I called them both [Elliott Tulkoff and his business partner, Linda] from the doctor's office and offered to do anything to keep it going. Growing up here, Things and Stuff was a landmark and I couldn't imagine the town without it. Without even thinking about it, I offered to buy it,” Teresa said.

They opened in September 2009.

Luckily, Teresa had retail and wholesale experience in clothing and medical sales, so the switch to gift retailing was smooth.

“Dean gave me his blessing and while handling my paperwork, realized that I needed help," she said. He came on board in May 2010 after being an IT manager for a Long Island-based firm for over 20 years, Teresa added.

Christmas gifts and decorations are everywhere in the store with much to choose from. The upscale gift shop offers unique items for babies, children and 'tweens. It stocks cards, jewelry, accessories for the home, Waterford crystal, bath and body products as well as great hostess gifts and wedding rentals. The christening gowns are lovely and there are a number of items that can be monogrammed.

Teresa explained, “What sets us apart is our expanded custom invitation business, by offering on-site printing…” They have “exemplary customer service with complimentary gift wrap and pride ourselves on our ‘family-like working environment. We are blessed with special repeat customers and a wonderful staff whom we treat like family.”
