#57: Neptune Camera

Home of Canon, Nikon, Pentax and much more.

When Herb Jacobs opened his Neptune Camera store in 1962 in Garden City, film cameras were the rage.

He called his place “Neptune” in deference to a cousin who had a successful business called the “Neptune Moving Company.” Hoping the “Neptune” name would be a good luck charm, Herb named his business with the same mythological Roman god of the sea in mind. Herb’s father worked with him. The store was a mecca for photographers.

Forty-nine years later, Robert Jacobs and his sister, Bonnie, are the present owners, making them the third generation working at Neptune. The store still draws in the professional and amateur photographer crowd who don’t have to travel to New York City for their supplies.

Robert remarked about his staff: “I have a very knowledgeable staff of ten. Most have been in the industry for 20 years or more...” He pointed out that his staff is familiar with their clients’ level of technical knowledge and can help them accordingly. Also of importance is their competitive pricing with the discount stores.

Neptune Camera has a wide selection of the highest quality products from name brands: digital cameras, camcorders, printers, scanners and binoculars. Accessories include: darkroom supplies, picture frames (including digital), photo albums and scrapbooks, just in time for holiday shopping.

The self-service photo kiosk is in the store where clients can touch up photos, fix red-eye, crop and add special effects to their pictures before printing them on high quality photo paper.
