$95,000 Stolen From LI Law Firm In Email Fraud Scam: Police

CARLE PLACE, NY — A Massachusetts man was arrested by Nassau police after stealing $95,000 from a Carle Place law firm through an email scam.
A 72-year-old male employee received while working for the firm received an email from who he believed was his boss, and owner of the law firm.
The email directed him to wire $95,000 from the firm's HSBC bank account. After completing the transaction, the employee spoke to his employer, who did make the request for funds.
Police say the fraud is commonly known as a business email compromise (BEC) scam.
A thorough investigation led to an arrest warrant issued for Dana Sarantakis, 41, of Lowell, Massachusetts.
On Wednesday, he turned himself in to Nassau police at the Eighth Precinct in Bethpage. He was charged with second-degree grand larceny and was due to be arraigned on Thursday.
