A Look at the 2013 Seniors on the Varsity Basketball Team

The Garden City Varsity Basketball team has Senior Night Monday February 11th at 6:15pm.

Please come on down to the game wearing WHITE to show your support.

The 2013 Seniors who are each captains this season are: Spencer Bais, Ed Blatz, Dan Bonchonsky, Andrew Granville, and Kyle Skramko. Each of the five seniors are making significant contributions to this years team. These multi-talented athletes and students also play football, lacrosse, tennis and golf. Many have played AAU and Long Island Lightning basketball. One is the leader of the GCHS Marching Band. They are considering college degrees in accounting, business, and engineering.

Here is an informal look at the seniors on the team.

#11 Spencer Bais
Spencer is the starting point guard and is playing in his second year on Varsity. He has a sister, Julia GCHS class of 2012, who attends the University of South Carolina.

Spencer’s excellent ball handling has broken the press of the Trojan opponents. He has consistently had numerous steals and assists this season. Spencer has also contributed offensively as the leading scorer in a number of games this season.

Spencer was a wide receiver and defensive back on the Long Island Championship Varsity Football Team. He made an exciting interception in the closing minutes versus Wantagh to end Wantagh’s last possession in the Nassau Championship game.

Spencer is undecided on where he will attend college in the fall. He is considering a business major and is receiving interest from various NESCAC schools for basketball.

#14 Ed Blatz
Ed is a two year captain, two year starter at center and is playing in his fourth year on Varsity. He has two sisters; Elizabeth GCHS 2010 and Jessica GCHS 2011.

Ed is a presence on the court with his inside and outside game. The Trojan opposition has a difficult time keeping him off the boards. Ed has led the team in scoring and rebounds in number of games.

Ed was a Second Team All Long Island Wide Receiver and starting defensive back on the Long Island Championship Varsity Football Team. He was a starting close defender on the 2012 NY State and National Champion Varsity Lacrosse Team. Ed is on the Inside Lacrosse “Top 50 Young Gun Seniors” and is listed at #39 in the country.

Ed is going to play Division 1 Lacrosse at Georgetown University.  

#50 Dan Bonchonsky
Dan is a starting forward and is playing in his second year on Varsity. He has a brother Peter, GCHS class of 2010, who is a junior at Penn State University.

Dan has been a beast down low for the Trojans. He has had a number of double/doubles in points/rebounds this season helping his team to secure victories.

Dan plays golf recreationally, has played baritone horn in the GCHS wind ensemble for 4 years and is the senior Drum Major in the GCHS Marching band.

Dan plans on studying engineering next year and has already been accepted to Penn State and Villanova.

#35 Andrew Granville
Andrew plays center and is playing in his second year on Varsity. He has brothers Jonathan (’15) who is a point guard on the Junior Varsity Basketball Team and Matthew (’18) who is a point guard on the GCMS 7th Grade Basketball Team.

Andrew has had a number of nice blocks this season. He has been solid defensively and has been clearing the boards. Andrew is one of the best passers “from the elbow” on the team feeding his teammates cutting to the hoop.

Andrew is an avid 4 handicap golfer and Captain of Garden City High School Varsity Golf Team. His is a 3 time Cherry Valley Junior Club Golf Champion. Andrew is also a tennis player on Garden City Varsity Tennis Team.

Andrew is considering Georgetown, Hamilton, Boston College, Northwestern, and Dartmouth to study business.

#24 Kyle Skramko
Kyle is a two year captain, two year starter at forward and is playing in his fourth year on Varsity. He has a brother, Sean GCHS class of 2011, who attends James Madison University. He has a sister Lauren (‘18) at the GCMS.

Kyle has frustrated the top scorers from other teams holding most well below their season averages. He tied the Garden City record for three pointers in a game and is the teams 3 point field goal leader.

Kyle started at wide receiver, defensive end, and on special teams for the Long Island Championship Varsity Football Team. He was the starting Long Stick Midfielder on the 2012 NY State and National Champion Varsity Lacrosse Team. Kyle was the JrNBA/JrWNBA NY Knicks Regional Champion in the Dribble, Dish and Swish Skills competition as a 12 year old. He was the JrNBA NY Knicks Regional Champion and was one of the top two 14 year olds in the United States for the NBA Fit Speed and Agility competition.

Kyle is going to play Division 1 Lacrosse at St John's University and plans to major in Accounting.
