Acclaimed Psychoanalyst Jessica R. Benjamin to Give Adelphi University's Annual Lindemann Lecture in Human Development

Jessica R. Benjamin, Ph.D., will present “Only One Can Live: the Fear of Harming and the Need for Repair” on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., as part of Adelphi University’s annual Lindemann Lecture in Human Development. The free lecture, hosted by the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, is open to the public and will be held at the Scholastic Building, 557 Broadway, New York, NY.
Dr. Benjamin is a practicing psychoanalyst in New York City, where she is a supervising faculty member at the New York University Postdoctoral Psychology program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis as well as a founding board member and faculty member of the Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. She was a cofounder of the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and for the Studies in Gender and Sexuality. She serves on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and is known to be a contributor to the development of relational psychoanalysis and its interrelation with feminism as well as the theory of intersubjectivity.
She is the author of three books: The Bonds of Love; Like Subjects, Love Objects; and Shadow of the Other. Her most frequently cited article is “Beyond Doer and Done To: An Intersubjective View of Thirdness” which was published in Psychoanalytic Quarterly 2004. She directed The Acknowledgement Project, a series of dialogues between Israeli and Palestine mental health professionals between 2004 and 2010. She also worked on Moving Beyond Violence, a film about members of Combatants for Peace in Israel and Palestine. Her book Beyond Doer and Done To: Recognition Theory, Intersubjectivity and the Third is due out in 2015.
