Adelphi Cross Country Finishes 14th at Iona College Meet of Champions

Bronx, N.Y. – The men's and women's cross country teams were back in action earlier this afternoon when they took on the talented field in the Dr. Boyle/Iona College Meet of Champions at the famed Van Cortland Park. Both squads managed 14th place finishes on the day.
 
Senior Elizabeth Eickelberg led the way for the Panthers as she did all of last year with an impressive 11th place finish out of the 190 runner field comprised of harriers throughout Division I, II and III. She clocked in a time of 23:17 over the challenging 6k course and was the first Division II runner to cross the finish line.
 
Less than a minute behind was junior Larissa Melendez. Her time of 24:12 was good enough for 52nd place and was the second Panther to break the tape. Freshman Nicole Elarde was Adelphi's third runner across the line as she cracked the top-100 with a 98th place overall finish in 25:32. Cecelia Capozzoli and Lindsey McLaughlin rounded out the scoring five. Capozzoli clocked in at 25:58 while McLaughlin finished in 27:52. Freshman Taylor Velez was a second behind McLaughlin and was Adelphi's sixth and final runner.
 
The Panther's managed to put together 382 points and finished 14th as a team. Albany won the team title with 67 points while Iona was second with 100 points. Kate Avery of Iona was the individual race winner in a time of 21:32.
 
For the second straight week, Nick Filippazzo was the Brown and Gold's top finisher. The senior's time of 26:28 over the hilly 8,000 meter course placed him 34th overall and also moves him into eighth all time on Adelphi's top-10 list at Van Cortland Park.
 
Connor Dolan stepped up as Adelphi's number two man, covering the course in 26:50 for 57th overall while William Marois recorded a 98th place overall finish in 27:29. Ryan Healy's 27:44 earned him 116th overall while Gregory Bader capped the Panther's top-five with a time of 28:11.
 
Matthew Moody and Chris Reilly finished within ten seconds of Bader with Moody clocking in at 28:13 and Reilly registering a time of 28:17.
 
The Panthers scored 374 points in the team scoring for 14th place. Iona College won the team title with 37 points as Yale's 97 points earned them second place. AIC's Michael Biwott was the overall victor with a time of 25:02.
 
Coach's Thoughts on the Meet
"I think both the men and women ran solid for this early on the season, especially on a course as tough as this one," stated Head Coach Katie Rees. "We need to work on our race tactics, work on getting out faster. Elizabeth and Nick ran exceptionally well today and they're both looking very strong this early on in the season."

The Panthers will send a small contingent to Franklin Park in Dorcester, Massachusetts next Saturday, September 28 while the rest of the team rests up for the Paul Short Invitational the following week.
