Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup Fall Standings Release
South Easton, Mass. - Adelphi University stands in second place in the Northeast-10 Conference President's Cup standings at the conclusion of the fall sports season, it was announced by the conference on Thursday.
On the strength of an NE-10 title in golf and runner-up finishes by volleyball and women's cross country, the University accumulated 70 points during the fall season. Adelphi trails first-place American International College by just 6.5 points.
The combined efforts of all Adelphi teams resulted in a fourth-place finish in the 2011-12 Presidents' Cup standings, one slot shy of the University's best finish of third place in 2009-10.
The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the Northeast-10. The achievement is awarded to the institution that compiles the highest point total based on the regular-season finishes of each of the school's programs in the conference's 23 respective sports. Points for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor/outdoor track and field, and golf are awarded based on placement in their respective conference championships.
American Int'l, which finished ninth in last year's standings, received 15.5 points for its women's soccer team's first-place tie atop the conference standings this fall. The school also received 15 points for its men's cross country team's second-place finish at the conference championships, and 12 more points for its women's cross country team's stellar performance at the same event. After American Int'l, a mere seven points separate the second-place and seventh-place teams in the standings.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell is in third place with 69.5 points. UMass Lowell saw its field hockey program advance to the national title game and its men's soccer team advance to the East Regional title game.
Bentley University is in the mix with 65.5 points for fourth, while Stonehill College is fifth with 65.0 points. Stonehill, which claimed both the men's and women's cross country titles, has won the last three Northeast-10 Presidents' Cups.
Southern Connecticut State University is sixth with 64.5 points, while Merrimack College is seventh with 63 points.
