Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball hosted the #22 Saint Anselm Hawks earlier this evening in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. After leading for the first six minutes, the Panther's found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard the rest of the way, falling by a score of 84-65. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 10-11, 7-8 in the NE-10 while the Hawks improve to 16-3 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
Adelphi was led by a trio of players in double figures with John Calarco pouring in 15 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Bradley Simpson added 14 points while Anthony Libroia added 13 of his own. RJ Samuels and Cliff Brown made their presence felt down low as they combined for 11 of Adelphi's 29 rebounds in the loss.
For the Hawks, Mike McCahey scored a game-high 28 points and led three of his teammates in double digit scoring. Roy Mabrey chipped in with 19 points while Chris Santo added 17 and John Nielsen did his part with 14.
Adelphi broke out to an early 11-4 lead in the opening four minutes of action behind six points from Simpson. However, the Hawks rallied to tie the action at 13-13 behind a layup from Santo and then took their first lead of the game behind a pair of Mabrey fouls shots.
Libroia notched his fifth point of the half on a layup just seconds later to knot the action at 15-15, but St. Anselm went on a hot streak over the next six minutes, drilling 13 unanswered from four different players for a 28-15 lead with under six minutes to play in the half.
Libroia's two-point jumper at the 4:24 mark broke the Panther's cold streak in which they missed six straight attempts from the field and marked their first field goal in over seven minutes. During that span, coupled with the struggles from the field, they turned the ball over six times and found themselves down by 11 points.
A three from Travis Jordan at 3:20 brought the Panthers to within nine, but the Hawks would control the pace of play over the final minutes and held the hosts at bay. Saint Anselm added seven more unanswered points before a jumper from Calarco found its mark as time expired, sending the game into halftime with the scoreboard reading 38-22 in favor of the visitors.
A quick layup from Simpson and a triple from Libroia opened the scoring in the second half to cut the Panthers' deficit to 11. However, the Manchester, New Hampshire based team embarked on a 12-4 scoring run to lengthen their lead to 19 with 15:07 to go. They then extended their advantage to as much as 25 points on an 8-0 run to set the score at 67-42 with just over nine minutes left to play.
A 9-2 run for the Brown and Gold, punctuated by consecutive threes from Libroia and Calarco pulled the home squad to within 18 as the Panthers attempted to chip away from there, getting to within 15. However, it would be as close as they would get as St. Anselm ran out the clock to secure the victory.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, February 6th when they travel to the University of New Haven for a 7:30 pm NE-10 contest.
