Overturned 12,000-Gallon Tanker Spills Gasoline On Old Country Road: Officials

GARDEN CITY/CARLE PLACE, NY — A 12,000-gallon gasoline tanker overturned after attempting to make a turn onto Old Country Road on Monday evening, police and fire marshals said.

At 7:59 p.m., a 31-year-old man was driving a 2025 Kenworth tanker southbound on Glen Cove Road when he tried to turn left onto Old Country Road, leading to the tanker flipping and causing a fuel spill, according to Nassau County police.

The tanker had the full amount of product before it overturned, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said.

The leak was believed to be stopped after 200 gallons of gasoline spilled onto the road, and as of Monday night, much of the spillage has been contained, fire marshals said.

According to police, the 31-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Many responding units were at the scene, including the NCFM, NCFM Hazardous Materials Division, Nassau County OEM, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), Nassau County Emergency Service Unit (ESU), Motor Carrier, Westbury Fire Department, and neighboring fire departments under the command of Chief Stewart of Westbury Fire Department, police and fire marshals said.

Old Country Road eastbound and westbound from Seabury Road to Ring Road and Glen Cove Road/Clinton Road northbound and southbound from Flower Road to Voice Road were closed overnight through Tuesday morning, but have since opened, police said.
