GARDEN CITY, NY — The Incorporated Village of Garden City released its crime report for the week ending Tuesday, August 18.

The items reported took place between August 12 and August 18 and are as follows:
Aug. 18:
- GCPD and GCFD responded to 1 South Ave., Adelphi Science Building, for an active smoke/heat detector activation, which GCFD determined was due to vaping.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a Garden City residence for an odor of gas. GCFD determined the fireplace was leaking gas. The gas was turned off prior to PD/FD arrival.
Aug. 17:
- GCPD responded to a residence in Hempstead to assist Hempstead PD with a burglary investigation. Hempstead PD arrested one person in connection with the burglary. GCPD remained at the scene until it was determined that there appeared to be no other perpetrators.
Aug. 16:
- A GCPD traffic officer stopped a 2022 Toyota on Clinton Rd. at Huntington Rd. regarding a license plate hit, advising the vehicle's registration was suspended. Further investigation revealed the 35-year-old female driver from Hempstead was driving with a suspended license. The driver was issued five tickets for the following violations: driving with a suspended registration, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, driving while driving privileges are suspended, and driving without a driver's license. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver is to be arraigned at the Village of Garden City Justice Court on October 5.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a Franklin Ave. business for an alarm which FD deemed was caused by vaping.
Aug. 15:
- Officers responded to the rear of a Franklin Ave. business for a report of damage to a rear passenger side window of a 2023 Mercedes-Benz. Inventory of the vehicle was taken, and nothing appeared to be missing. Damage caused by unknown means.
- GCPD officers participated in Goal Zero, a distracted driving initiative in memory of a New Jersey resident, Patti Smith, who was killed by a distracted driver. Goal Zero is a traffic safety campaign focused on reducing serious motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities through education, awareness, and high-visibility enforcement. Its mission is simple: Zero serious crashes, Zero preventable injuries, and Zero lives lost. During the initiative, numerous vehicle and traffic law stops were conducted within the Village. Informational safety flyers were distributed, and 43 tickets were issued, including 19 speeding tickets, two cell phone/texting tickets, one red light ticket, and one illegal U-turn ticket.
Aug. 14:
- GCPD responded to a report of an identity theft. Resident reports unauthorized purchase online. Report for documentation only.
- Officers responded to a loud party. No violations observed.
Aug. 13:
- GCPD responded to the train tracks near St. James St. North. A garbage bag filled with garbage was on the tracks. GoGov request completed to have it removed.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to Garden City Plaza for a fire call. The alarm was triggered due to burnt food.
Aug. 12:
- Officers responded to a Garden City residence where a man stated that while he was walking his dog, they were almost struck by a Cadillac. The vehicle stopped, and a verbal dispute occurred. The driver of the vehicle was not at the scene. No evidence of criminality.
- A GCPD officer stopped a 29-year-old Bronx man operating a 2021 Jeep due to a license plate hit. Investigation revealed the vehicle had switched plates, was unregistered, uninsured, and uninspected. In addition to those violations, the driver was also ticketed for operating the vehicle with a suspended license (two counts) and having no license. The vehicle was impounded and plates confiscated.
- A Garden City resident reports she lost $6,000 when she responded to a fake job opportunity. The report was forwarded to the detective division.
