
2012 Garden City Pool Applications Now Available: Get a head start on the summer! 2012 Garden City Pool applications have been sent to all residents! Check out the Splash newsletter to see all the great events planned and join us for another summer of ‘Fun in the Sun’ at the GC Pool. If you did not receive your application, visit www.gardencityrecreation.org or visit our Administrative Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
Please note – our Swim Lesson Registration Form was inadvertently left out of the mailing. If you need this form you may download it from our website or visit our office for a copy. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and class code for which you are registering with a first and second choice. Mail all information with full payment of $15 for each child with your pool application. A separate $15 check must be enclosed for each child. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”
Registration for Roller Hockey Begins: The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce its spring roller hockey programs. Whether you played last season or haven’t played in for a while, now is the perfect time to sign up and experience all the fun. Our spring season is set to begin in late March. All programs take place at Community Park’s roller rink.
Registration Information: In-person registration began Feb. 26 at St. Paul's. Applications are available on the department's website and at the Recreation Dept.’s administrative office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.” You can either mail or drop off your registration but remember, space is limited in all our programs so please register early.

A reminder: Each participant is required to wear full equipment at all times. This includes: hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, roller blades, hockey stick, long pants and a protective cup.

Preschool Time in St. Paul's Field House: St. Paul’s Field House will have open time for parents to play with their children during the winter months. This program runs six weeks and began Feb. 14 according to the following schedule:
- Tuesdays 10:30 a.m. to noon
- Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. to noon
The gym will be monitored but parents are responsible for their child’s activities. Absolutely no bats, sticks or riding toys of any kind will be allowed in the gym. This program will run through the end of March.
Family Fun Time on Sundays: On Sunday afternoons, the St. Paul’s Field House will be open for “Family Fun” for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m. each Sunday until March 11.
This time is designated for family time only. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop off program. We ask that elementary aged children be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of our users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed.
Winter Session of Mad Science: The Recreation Department is again offering an after school science program for Grades K-5 run by Mad Science of Long Island. These hands-on workshops offer topics such as “Bugs” and “Mad Science Machines” in a fun and educational way! Make and take its will be included in the sessions. This six-week program began the week of Jan. 23 according to the following schedule:
- Grades 3-5 Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 4 p.m.
All classes are one hour in length and are held in the St. Paul’s Senior Center, next door to the Recreation Office, at 108 Rockaway Ave. The cost of this six-week session is $103. Adult Art Classes at Cluett Hall: On Feb. 17, the Recreation Department again began offering an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Our classes are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Friday in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program is $110. (Supplies are bought on your own- a supply list will be handed out at the first class). This program teaches the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students are given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice. Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student receives the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.
Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes. To register for our pastel class, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
Adult Tennis Lesson Interest Form Now Available: Registration for the winter session of our adult tennis lessons has now started. Classes began in January and are played at the Community Park Tennis Center. Our 10-week, one-hour class costs $249. Our Recreation Department offers lessons for adults in all ability levels. In order to create sessions geared to the needs of our residents, we are asking any adult who is a resident in the Inc. Village of Garden City and is interested in our tennis lessons to fill out an interest form by visiting either our office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or downloading an application at www.gardencityrecreation.org. Please follow the directions listed.
-Choose the days and times you are available to play
-Self rate your tennis ability
-Either drop off or mail your application with a check for $249 made payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City to the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Payment must accompany the form.
Classes will then be made by grouping people of similar abilities according to the dates they are available. Your check will not be cashed until you are entered in a class.
Adult Yoga Registration Begins: Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed adult yoga
classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one hour long. All classes began in mid-January. Any resident of the village is invited to join these relaxing classes. The session runs for 14 weeks at a cost of $91. The course schedule is as follows:
- Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 23 to be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center
- Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. beginning Jan. 11 to be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall
