And the Votes Are In...

On a day that should have been one of the greatest election days for baseball's Hall of Fame it became probably one of its most memorable!

No one is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this year in what unquestionably could have been a memorable year since statistically this may be one of the best groups since the first votes were cast. However, the writers have obviously spoken on the topic of steroid use in baseball and refuse to honor even those players that apparently had the stats prior to being cited as users of a banned substance.

Now I don’t get a real vote but I could have sworn that when I matched Mike Piazza’s career stats against those catchers already in the Hall that he would have been a clear candidate.

Likewise, the Houston Astro's tandem of Biggio and Bagwell would appear to have the stats to get in, just maybe not clearly enough to be first time ballot elections – although I would have thought Biggio’s more than 3,000 hits were enough to gain entrance to baseballs elite group.

So although I think the voters got it wrong with these three, they got it terribly right with the rest of the bunch of players that are acknowledged cheaters.

It’s amazing that a seven time MVP and a seven time Cy Young award winner could not even get 40% of the vote when a minimum of 75% is needed to gain election. I do believe that the voters will eventually elect all five of the players I mentioned above but wouldn’t it be an excellent example for our youth to keep out those that have been identified as cheaters, and that taking shortcuts in life will have its ramifications.
