GARDEN CITY, NY — An aspiring sports broadcaster from Garden City has earned a prestigious honor as he prepares to take the next step toward his dream career.

Thomas Gamba, an 18-year-old senior at Chaminade High School, was recently awarded the Jim McKay Memorial Scholarship after submitting an 18-minute broadcast reel, letters of recommendation, multiple essays, and a resume. He was selected by a committee from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).

He described hearing NATAS co-chair Danielle Mannion announce his name as the recipient as a "surreal feeling."

"Jim McKay was an absolute legend of the sports media world, and to have my name associated with his is an incredible honor," Gamba said. "When I started broadcasting in my freshman year, I could've never imagined that I would be given an amazing award like this."

Gamba said the scholarship is another step toward his ultimate goal of becoming a play-by-play broadcaster on some of sports' biggest stages.

"In my career, I hope to be regularly calling games for multiple professional sports," he said.

Whether it's the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final, World Series, or Final Four, Gamba hopes to one day be behind the microphone for championship events watched by millions.

If he could offer advice to his younger self — or any student pursuing a dream — Gamba said perseverance and self-determination are essential.

"If you work hard in pursuit of your dreams, anything is possible, no matter the obstacles placed in front of you," he said. "Most people probably looked at me when I lost my father at 12 years old and thought that I couldn't overcome that obstacle, but through hard work and belief in myself, I am where I am today."

As he prepares for college and beyond, Gamba said he is eager to continue learning every aspect of the industry.

"Whether it is behind the scenes or on the mic," he said. "I take pride in my work ethic, which I believe is strong enough to achieve my dreams someday."
