Bites Nearby: NY Soup Exchange

Home-made soups and a whole lot more.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Garden City Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here’s this week’s choice:

NY Soup Exchange: There is an extensive menu of soups at NY Soup Exchange, six or seven of which are served daily. Owner Ken Kaplan makes his soups fresh every day and tries to maximize his customers’ options by serving an offering from each of the poultry, beef, seafood, vegetarian, cream soup and stew categories.

From traditional Grandma’s Chicken Noodle (the favorite, served on Thursdays), Galveston Gumbo, Chesapeake Crab Bisque, Hyannis Lobster Bisque, Ben’s Chili, Baja Black Bean all the way to exotic Jamaican Pumpkin, there is a soup to appeal to practically any taste. Prices range from $5.25 for a cup to $14 for a quart.

If you want something other than soup, the café offers wraps including Buffalo Chicken and Chicken Caesar (A regular is $4, a large is $7.50). Salads range from a fruit salad for $4.75 to the Beantown Salad (dried cranberries, pecans and gorgonzola cheese over a bed of mixed greens and raspberry vinaigrette). The small salad is $5.25, the large $7.75.

New on the menu is a Student Special for $7.75. The combo comes with a cup of soup/stew and either a wrap or salad (excludes premium soup) and can of soda. Students must show valid high school/college ID.
