Garden City Boys Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth
Chris Tavernese's goal in the first half was the difference in a 1-0 win over Wantagh Thursday.
The Garden City boys have come on strong down the stretch with four straight victories to wrap up a playoff berth. With a 7-1-1 record the Trojans currently sit atop the Conference A-1 and are in good position for a top seed in the playoffs.
After suffering a 2-0 loss at home to South Side, Coach Cutter has the boys playing some of their best soccer of the season, clicking on both sides of the ball with eight goals scored and only one against in the last four games.
Against Wantagh Thursday, it was the tenacity of the GC players that kept the game in the hands of the home team not allowing Wantagh any clean looks at the goal while also putting pressure on the offensive side with several good scoring chances.

Tavernese broke through the defense in the 25th minute of the first half with a laser shot into the corner of the goal eluding the diving Wantagh keeper. Garden City kept up the pressure all over the field with the likes of JP Basile, Jack McManus, John Simmons, Finn Gibbons and Jack Fenty all playing strong on the ball. Keeper John Mackey didn’t have an active day but when challenged he came up with the ball to ensure his third shutout out of the last four wins.
